Transitions from vocational school to professional education and training college in the field of health: Analysis of general conditions and influencing factors in the Canton of Berne

The main target group for enrolment in professional education and training (PET) colleges specialised in nursing are holders of the Federal VET Diploma, Health Care Assistant. The proportion of holders with this qualification who go on to enrol in PET college nursing programmes is crucial to ensure skilled workforce in the cantons. The Office of Upper-Secondary Education and Training of the canton of Berne and its partners (Department of Health and Welfare, PET nursing college in the canton of Berne and Profes-sional organisation for health of the canton of Berne) identified a need for action to improve the transition rate to the cantonal PET nursing college.

Commissioned by the Canton of Bern, Office of Upper-Secondary Education and Training, this study was intended to take stock of and analyse the current situation. The broad range of information gathered will enable the client to decide on new measures aimed at increasing transition rates within the Canton of Berne. The situation analysis involved an intercantonal comparison of transitions and corresponding general conditions and influencing factors. This enabled systematic comparison of different approaches to the design of nursing programmes at PET colleges in various cantons as well as analysis of the correlation with transition rates in each canton. More detailed information about the comparison can be obtained from the Canton of Berne’s Office of Upper-Secondary Education and Training.
