In addition to teaching, R&D is among the key competences of the Swiss Federal University for Vocational Education and Training SFUVET. We work with national and international institutions that deal with vocational education and training as well as with higher education institutions both in Switzerland and other countries.

SFUVET research activities are structured into three nationally coordinated research areas, namely: Training and learning within the VPET System; Integration in VPET and the labour market; and Strategic Planning of VET. Moreover, the Swiss Observatory for Vocational Education and Training (OBS SFUVET) was created to monitor the latest trends affecting vocational education and training.

In 2009, SFUVET established an Evaluation Unit responsible for evaluating programmes, projects and other vocational education and training activities. This unit provide evaluation results that are relevant to practitioners, based on scientific evidence and in line with the evaluation standards of the Swiss Evaluation Society (SEVAL). The unit also provides evaluation training courses that are open to people from other countries.

Every two years, SFUVET organises a Congress on Research in Vocational Education and Training (VET Congress) in Zollikofen. This event draws researchers from all over the world, offering participants the opportunity to present their research findings and exchange views on current topics relating to vocational education and training.
